Lawrence Tong
OM China Director
"When I look at world missions in terms of what the Chinese Church can do, in the future, I see here a tremendous force. Resources, material, finances and the people – I believe the churches in China are waking up to missions and the needs of the world!"
Fifty year-old Lawrence Tong was born in Singapore, the second oldest of five children. Lawrence accepted Christ in 1973. In 1989 he graduated from Biola University in California with a B.A. in Communications, and in 2000 received his MBA from the University of La Verne in California, graduating magna cum laude.
Lawrence worked as a port volunteer on the Logos mission ship in 1974 and officially joined OM Ships International in 1978. He served aboard Doulos from 1978 to 1983, Logos from 1983 to 1988, and Logos II from 1989 to 1990 and 2001 to 2005.
He and his wife Susan (USA) first met on the Doulos in 1979, then again in 1988. They were married in June of 1989 and have two children, Josh age 17 and Benji age 15.
Over the years Lawrence’s work with OM's ship ministry evolved considerably. He did intensive training in 1978, served eight months in the book fair, fourteen years in programme, and ten years in ship event management. Prior to his present appointment as OM China Director, he served as Director of Logos II, where for more than four years he led the ministries of the ship and a community of 200 crew members from 45 nations.
Lawrence started ministry work in Singapore in 1991 and says that it was a natural transition from serving on Logos II to becoming OM China's Director. He divides his time between China, Singapore and South Carolina, USA as he coordinates the ministry of OM China.
